River of Stars
The Pillar Guilds represent the collective political might of the giant races, and still do — although the surety of that rulership has declined along with the giants themselves. The giants had formed around guilds as a political unit from clans and regions and occasional charismatic leaders for some time, and these guilds, as one might expect, traced themselves to key professions and roles within the society, many of which were craft-related. Of course as they became units of rule, membership or citizenship (for want of a better word) in a guild largely did not affect any one giant’s social role — except in terms of influence and status.
The most powerful of the Pillar Guilds had representatives who attended the Arches, an enormous and justly-legendary chamber at the heart of Rumblehalls. All matters were handled there, and for many generations with astonishing assurance. But conflict among the Guilds, especially between the Plainwatch and the Rootwick, would not only end the harmony but trigger a brutal and devastating civil war called the Thundering Wars, a war that would draw in not only nearly all the guilds in some capacity, but even local allies and enemies of the giantish nation.
The “pillar” of the Pillar Guilds — the many pillars of the Arches, that are carved with the long, tangling runes of the many guilds.
